A Component of Oregano Kills Prostate Cancer Cells

If you love oregano and have an above average risk for prostate cancer, you are in luck. A component of oregano kills prostate cancer cells.

That is what researcher Dr. Supriya Bavadekar of the Long Island University is reporting at a conference in San Diego.

Carvacrol appears to cause the death of prostate cancer cells, which is otherwise known as "cell suicide." It is a component of the essential oils in oregano and thyme.  More research will be conducted to determine exactly how carvacrol goes about killing these cancer cells.

Since the herbs oregano and thyme are widely used spices and considered safe for human consumption, the use of its oil to kill prostate cancer cells is a significant finding in the fight against cancer. Natural remedies for serious diseases is always a significant breakthrough, since these potential cures are typically cheaper than manufactured drugs, and have less to no dangerous side-effects.

I personally don't like oregano, but I may be developing a taste for this spice, since I come from a family that has an above average risk for developing prostate cancer. There was a time when you could not get me to eat one sardine, but I now eat three servings a week of this little and nutrient packed fish. So I know that I can learn to appreciate the taste of oregano.

Fresh oregano is less pungent than the dried version. It complements most tomato sauce and meat recipes. The flowers are also edible, and can be used in salads.

The plant is fairly easy to grow, and is hardy from US planting zones 5 to 9. It can be grown in containers, or used as a ground cover in sunny gardens. It has few pest problems.

So, include fresh oregano in your arsenal of prostate cancer fighters, and frequently use this healthy spice to improve your health and fitness.

Dietary Habits of Chinese Breast Cancer Survivors

What do Chinese Breast Cancer survivors have in common concerning their dietary habits?

They eat a lot of cruciferous vegetables.

This is the conclusion of a study conducted by the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

What are Cruciferous Vegetables?

The Chinese women that were studied ate primarily
  1. Turnips
  2. Chinese cabbage or bok choy and their greens
  3. White broccoli
  4. And Brussels sprouts
Cruciferous Vegetables that are common in the US are
  1. Broccoli
  2. Cabbage
  3. Kale
  4. Collard greens
  5. Brussels sprouts
  6. Kohlabi
  7. Cauliflower
  8. Mustard greens
  9. Turnip greens
  10. Watercress and garden cress
Study Results

The researchers found that the amount of these vegetables that were consumed by Chinese women in the first 36 months after being diagnosed with breast cancer was associated with
  1. A reduced risk of total mortality
  2. Breast cancer specific mortality
  3. And a reduced risk of disease recurrence
The women who ate the most of these vegetable each day had
  1. A 62% reduced risk of total mortality
  2. A 62% reduced risk of breast cancer mortality
  3. And a 35% reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence
This is in comparison with the women who ate the least of cruciferous vegetables.

This study just adds to the growing amount of evidence that making cruciferous vegetables and dark green leafy vegetables the major part of your diet not only reduces your risk of breast and other cancers, but also is important for you overall health and fitness.

Is beta Sitosterol Revolutionary or New?

I'm sure that many of you have seen the TV commercial with the aging football player stating that a pill with a revolutionary and new ingredient has relieved him of his benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH symptoms. And what is this revolutionary new ingredient - beta Sitosterol. Well -

What is beta Sitosterol?

Beta Sitosterol is a phytosterol, which simply is the plant version of cholesterol. The one important difference is that phytosterols for most people will not cause plaque buildup in your veins and arteries like the animal version of cholesterol can do.

Is beta Sitosterol Revolutionary and New?

I don't know about being revolutionary, but its not new. It has been around for decades in health stores, and Europeans have been using it for BPH for quite some time now.

What Is It Used For And How Does It Work?

According to WebMD, Beta Sitosterol blocks the absorption of cholesterol, and thus is used for heart disease and high cholesterol. It is also used to help prevent cancers and gallstones, as well as BPH and symptoms of menopause.

Since it is similar to cholesterol. it enters the blood stream the same way that cholesterol does, and that is through the lymphatic system. If you take a beta Sitosterol pill before eating, it will be absorbed first and prevent cholesterol from being absorbed. It also binds to the prostate to help reduce swelling and inflammation.

Does It Really Work With BPH?

It has helped me a lot. As a matter of fact, it is about the only thing that I have tried that does work.

And you don't have to use the more expensive versions. Beta Sitosterol is easy to find, and you can save money by using a brand that doesn't spend a lot of money advertising on TV. Just go to your favorite supplement website and type in "beta sitosterol" in the search box, and you will get a lot of brand selections.

My favorite brand is Source Naturals Mega Strength Beta Sitosterol. However, from this link - Beta Sitosterol Search Results, you can see that there are many brands that you can choose from.

To help maintain my prostate health, I also take 300 mcg of melatonin before I go to bed at night, and 25 mg of zinc.

Melatonin For Prostate Health

In a previous post - titled " Melatonin And Proper Prostate Function ", recent research has shown that low doses of melatonin can help reduce the risks of prostate cancer and also helps to reduce prostate swelling. You only need a small amount of melatonin (300 mcg) each day. You should take it only 30 minutes before you go to bed, since melatonin will make you drowsy.

Zinc For Prostate Health

Zinc is also known to reduce prostate inflammation. In low doses - less than 100 mg per day, it may reduce the risks of cancer and help with BPH symptoms. However, as reported at WebMD, doses higher than 100 mg may increase the risks of prostate cancer. As with most supplements, a little can be good, while a lot can be very bad to your health.

Beta Sitosterol, melatonin and zinc can improve your prostate health. However, it is not necessarily revolutionary or new.

A Component of Turmeric Spice May Help Slow Prostate Tumor Growth

Drink turmeric tea and spice up your dinner with turmeric and help protect your prostate from cancerous tumors.

The research team from Kimmel Cancer Center is reporting that a component of the spice turmeric, which is called curcumin, may help slow prostate tumor growth. In particular, the team is reporting that

"Curcumin, an active component of the Indian curry spice turmeric, may help slow down tumor growth in castration-resistant prostate cancer patients on androgen deprivation therapy (ADT)."

Turmeric is the spice that turns yellow mustard yellow, and is used in most curry blends.

This is further evidence that turmeric spice may be beneficial in preventing and treating some cancers such as prostate, breast, skin and colon cancer.

The Home Cooking website has some great turmeric recipes and suggestions.

Here is a great Turmeric Tea Recipe:

Here is how to make 1 serving of Turmeric Tea:

  • Bring 1 cup of water to boil
  • Add ¼ teaspoon of ground turmeric and ¼ teaspoon of ground ginger to boiling water
  • Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes
  • Strain the tea (optional). I personally don't strain my tea.
  • Add honey and/or lemon to taste (optional). To reduce calories, use Stevia to sweeten the tea rather than honey.
  • To smooth the taste, you can add just a drop of vanilla extract to the tea.

Enjoy the unique taste of Turmeric Tea. Drink it frequently, and improve your health and fitness. Live long and prosper!

Prostate Cancer And Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Last year the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial reported a surprising result. The authors reported that higher levels of DHA, which is one of the two omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish, were statistically correlated with the risk of high-grade prostate cancer in US men.

An article published by the DHA-EPA Omega-3 Institute titled " Blood Serum Levels of Omega-3 and Prostate Cancer " makes some interesting observations of this result.
  • The high levels of DHA in US men that participated in the study actually are very low levels on a global standard. This is because US men typically eat very little fish, especially cold water fish like sardines and salmon. Compared to Japanese men who eat much more fish in their diet, the high DHA levels in the US study are very low.
  • The intakes of fish or the intake of fish derived omega-3 fatty acids, which is DHA and EPA were not directly measured during the study.
  • Many other studies that were designed to find any relationship between a fish diet and prostate cancer have found little relationship between the two. Other studies have found that a cold water fish diet actually had protective effects for total prostate cancer risks.
  • The men in this study actually had very low levels of EPA. One conclusion might be that moderately elevated levels of DHA with low levels of EPA may be a risk of advanced prostate cancer. Moderate elevated levels of DHA with low levels of EPA is one result of low fish consumption. Cold water fish and fish oil supplements contain both DHA and EPA omega-3 fatty acids.
Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen in their article " Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Prostate Cancer " make the point that this study shows only a statistical link between moderately elevated levels of DHA and prostate cancer and not a cause. This is not a cause-and-effect study. Both use an omega-3 supplement from marine algae.

The conclusion at the Harvard Health Publications in their article " Surprising findings on omega-3, trans fats, and prostate cancer risk don't warrant a change in diet " is that men should continue eating the recommended servings of cold water fish, which is at least two servings per week. Further they state that "Eating moderate amounts of wild salmon, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and other foods rich in omega-3s is a healthy strategy, Kennedy told me. The best “medicine” for men who are worried about their risk of prostate cancer is to maintain a healthy weight, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, and control stress. The good news is that taking these steps will promote heart health, too."

If you are worried about mercury in cold water fish, wild salmon, herring, sardines and shrimp are low in mercury. Canned chunk light tuna and cod have moderate amounts of mercury, but also have less omega-3 fatty acids. The cold water fish are also high in vitamin B-12 vitamin D and selenium, which promote good cardiovascular and prostate health. For further information see " Consumer Guide to Mercury in Fish ." If you are concerned about mercury, you can take an omega-3 supplement from marine algae.

It is also interesting that Alaska being a state that consumes more fish than other states also is one of the states that has the lowest prostate cancer rates in the US. And China and Japan also have some of the lowest rates for prostate cancer in the world while also consuming more fish than other nations, especially the US.

The net conclusion for men is to continue eating at least two servings each week of cold water fish or a high quality fish oil supplement as part of your health and fitness routine. The fish, however, gives you added nutrition as an excellent source or protein, vitamins B-12 and D and cancer fighting selenium.

Breast Cancer In Men

Can Men Get Breast Cancer?

Yes. Breast cancer in men is rare, but it does happen. Men have a small amount of breast tissue, which is not capable of producing milk. It is this breast tissue that can become cancerous in men.

Male Breast Cancer Statistics

Male breast cancer accounts for only 1% of all breast cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 1,970 male breast cancers are diagnosed each year, and will cause approximately 390 deaths. Most men who develop breast cancer are between the ages of 60 and 70, although it can happen at any age. The statistical risks of a man developing this disease is about 1 in a 1,000.

Male Breast Cancer Symptoms

The early signs of male breast cancer may be a firm mass just below the nipple. Typically, the lump is painless and is about 2.5 centimeters in diameter. Skin changes near the nipple can include ulceration, puckering, redness or scaling, or the nipple may turn inward.

If the cancer spreads to the bones, you may experience bone pain near the area of the cancer. In advance stages, you may experience weakness, weight loss or malaise.

Types Of Male Breast Cancer
  • Ductal Carcinoma in Situ - This type is curable with surgery. The cancer cells do not grow into the fatty tissue of the breast nor does it spread outside the breast. It accounts for about 1 in 10 cases of male breast cancer.
  • Invasive Ductal Carcinoma - This type spreads outside of the breast tissue into other parts of the body. It accounts for about 8 of 10 cases of male breast cancer. It typically will spread to the nipple.
  • Invasive Lobular Carcinoma - This type if rare in men since men usually do not have lobular tissue. It typically spreads into the fatty tissue of the breast, and accounts for about 2% of all male breast cancers.
  • Lobular Carcinoma in Situ - It forms in the lobules, but does not spread into the fatty tissue of the breast. Very rare in men.
  • Paget Disease of the Nipple - It forms in the breast ducts and spreads to the nipple. The skin of the nipple may appear crushed, scaly and red. The area around the nipple may itch, ooze, burn and may bleed. You should feel a lump within the breast near the nipple.
  • Inflammatory Breast Cancer - This is an aggressive form of breast cancer, but fortunately rare especially in men. It causes swollen breast, which becomes red, warm and tender. It does not form a lump. It can be mistaken for an infection of the breast.
Possible Causes of Male Breast Cancer

  • Radiation Exposure - radiation therapy in the chest area can increase your risk of developing breast cancer.
  • High levels of Estrogen or Hyperestrogenism - All men produce small amounts of estrogen, but some may produce abnormally high levels. This can increase the risks of developing breast cancer.
  • Klinefelter's Syndrome - this is an inherited condition, where a male inherits an extra X sex chromosome. Men with this condition will produce high levels of estrogen, develop enlarged breast, have sparse facial and body hair, small testes and are unable to produce sperm. It also comes with an increase risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Cirrhosis of the Liver - this disease elevates blood estrogen levels and comes with an increased risk of breast cancer.
  • Familial Predisposition - men with several female relatives with breast cancer also have an increase risk of developing the disease.
  • Finasteride - this is a drug used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia and to preven prostate cancer. It may be associated with an increased risk of male breast cancer.

Exercise for Cancer Treatment

When diagnosed with cancer and going through cancer treatment, there are many actions that a person can take in order to improve their life and assist in their own treatment. One extremely important thing that many cancer patients may not think of is to participate in regular exercise while going through cancer treatment. Though some people may be reluctant to get involved in exercise, thinking that it will use up energy needed to fight the cancer, many doctors and researchers have announced that doing light, moderate exercise can be extremely beneficial to cancer patients and survivors.

The benefit of exercise has been demonstrated in a number of different cancers, from lung cancer to mesothelioma. One of the most major benefits is the improved physical functioning and lesser fatigue. Doctors have noted that the overall quality of life of cancer patients who exercise is greatly improved.

Another reason that doing exercise is important while going through cancer treatment is that it helps strengthen muscles. There are many potential issues that can arise when a person is limited to bed rest and is not getting regular physical activity. These issues include stiff joints, breathing problems, and bedsores. Even small amounts of exercise and physical activity can assist in avoiding these issues. For those who are caring for a cancer patient, it is important to allow the patient to do as much on their own as possible. Naturally, do not let them attempt a task that they are unable to do, but doing everything for them reduces their own independence, and further limits their physical activity. Encourage small amounts of physical activity, such as taking a short walk every day. Another option is to complete light exercises that work on muscle strength and improved range of motion. Talk to a doctor or physical therapist as to what types of exercises would be most beneficial. Many of these exercises can be completed while the patient is in bed.

Maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle is an important way to increase the overall quality of life, and can even assist in the recovery from cancer. Focusing on statistics such as a mesothelioma survival rate are of no benefit; instead take the situation into your own hands and spend time taking action that can be used to help with treatment and recovery. Cancer patients should make sure to set aside time each day in order to get some physical activity, whether it's a walk around the neighborhood, some range of motion exercises, or just getting up and moving around. Friends and family of cancer patients can participate in these activities as well, as a way to spend time with those they care about, and assist in activities that will help with care.

What Is BPA?

BPA is back in the news with a new press release from the Harvard School of Public Health titled: "Consuming Canned Soup Linked to Greatly Elevated Levels of the Chemical BPA."

BPA is an abbreviation for the chemical name Bisphenol A. It is an additive used to harden plastics, especially polycarbonate plastic which has the Number 7 recycling symbol on the bottom. Many companies over the last few years that make food containers have stopped using BPA. However, it apparently is still used as a food can lining for some canned food products.

BPA Risks

A few studies suggest that BPA may cause brain and behavior problems, cancer and heart problems with long term use. All of these studies, however, involved animals rather than humans.

Results of the New Harvard Study

The new study determined the concentration of urinary BPA in people who consumed canned soup versus freshly made soup.

What is unique about this study is that it used human volunteers rather than animals. Urine samples of 75 human volunteers were studied after consuming canned soup and after consuming fresh, never canned, soup.

The results showed that just one serving of canned soup raised urinary concentrations of BPA by 1,221% compared to eating one serving of fresh soup. This large increase in BPA concentrations in the volunteer's urine samples after one serving of canned soup was a surprise to the researchers.

If BPA is a concern, you may want to avoid canned foods until the industry eliminates BPA from can linings completely. Canned foods may save time, but fresh, unprocessed foods are the healthier choice.

CNN - Can The Cell Phones We Use Everyday Cause Cancerous Brain Tumors?

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has stated that cell phone use might cause a type of brain cancer called glioma. It also stated that additional research is needed to determine the exact risk. So, cell phones may be carcinogenic to humans. Children are most at risk.

The highest risk comes from using your cell phone for voice calls. If you text or use hands free devices, you reduce your radiation exposure 10 fold.

Why You Should Lose Belly Fat

Why should you lose belly fat?

It is actually visceral fat that is the health concern. Visceral fat is the fat layer that lies under the layer of abdominal muscle. This fatty tissue surrounds our organs, and is the cause of giving us that "beer belly" physique. Research has shown that excessive viseral fat can lead to some
serios health concerns.

Below we will explore

  • Why Visceral Fat Is Dangerous To Health

  • The Proper Diet To Lose Stomach Fat

  • Proper Exercises To Lose Stomach Fat

Why Visceral Fat Is Dangerous To Your Health

Visceral fat cells are more than just stored energy. They can produce hormones that can negatively affect your health.

These fat cells can contribute to the development of breast cancer by producing estrogen. Visceral fat cells can also help develop type 2 diabetes by producing insulin resistant hormones. Research has also shown that an excess of visceral fat around your waist is associated with
and increase risk of

  • Diabetes

  • Breast Cancer

  • Gallbladder Problems

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Heart Disease

  • And Colorectal Cancer

How do you know if your waist is too large?

Measure your bare waist just above your hip bone with a soft tape measure. Don't hold in your stomach or hold your breath as you measure yourself.

You should find ways to lose belly fat if your waist is larger than 40 inches for men, and 35 inches for women. If your waist size is too large according to these guidelines, you need to lose belly fat to reduce your risk of developing some of the diseases listed above.

Happily, visceral fat responds well to a good exercise routine and diet plan. A good exercise routine and diet plan becomes even more important as we age when our physical activity and metabolism slows.

Click Here for more informatiion on the health risks of visceral fat.

The Proper Diet To Lose Belly Fat

Basically, centering your diet around whole and minimally processed grains, fresh vegetables and fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds will help your achieve your goal to lose belly fat.

More importantly, you should stay away from these foods:

  • Enriched Flours

  • Bleached Flours

  • Foods with added sugars

  • High Fructose corn syrup

  • Junk foods and snacks

  • And hydrogenated oils

An added way to help yourself lose stomach fat is to use these tips to speed up your metabolism:

  • Frequently drink cold liquids

  • Keep yourself hydrated

  • Eat 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day rather than eating just 1 or 2 large meals

  • Eat more lean protein rich foods

  • Drink green tea or black coffee without added fat or sugar

  • And use hot peppers with your meals

Proper Exercises To Lose Belly Fat

Use full body, multi-joint exercises to lose belly fat. Ab specific exercises like situps and crunches do tone muscle, but don't burn fat. Full body exercises on the other hand burn stomach fat by increasing your metabolism and fat burning hormone production. Full body workouts accomplish this by working many large muscles groups and your cardiovascular system all at the same time.

A few examples of full body exercises are:

When doing an aerobic exercise, use an Interval Training technique rather than a constant speed and intensity technique. Interval Training involves rotating between a slow speed and intensity and a high speed and intensity cycle. For example, rotating between walking at 4 miles per hour for a minute and a half, then running at 6 or 8 miles per hour for a minute is one possible cycle. You can repeat this cycle for an excellent 20 minute Interval Training workout. Research has shown that Interval Training actually burns more calories and gets you into good physical shape faster than a constant speed aerobic routine.

Click Here for more information on ways to lose belly fat.

In summary, losing stomach fat involves switching to a healthy diet plan and a good exercise routine. Otherwise, you run the risk of developing some serious medical problems that can be avoided with some simple lifestyle changes.

Colon Cancer Prevention

A new Danish study concludes that 23% of colorectal cancers can be prevented by a healthy lifestyle that includes:
  • At least 30 minutes a day of exercise
  • Moderate intake of alcohol
  • No Smoking
  • A healthy diet
  • And a small waist size.

This agrees with an article written several years ago that stated that numerous studies indicated that highly active people substantially reduced their risk of colon cancer compared to sedentary people. A Chinese study also indicated that sedentary individuals who consumed high amounts of saturated fats had a four fold increase in colon cancer rates compared to individuals who were the least sedentary and consumed the least amount of saturated fats. The same article stated that their was little correlation between exercise and rectal cancer.

Health Benefits Of Curcumin From The Spice Turmeric

Turmeric is that peppery, yellow spice that is used in curry. It is also the spice that makes bright yellow mustard , well, bright yellow. It is so good at making things yellow that it is used as a textile dye.

A lot of research has been conducted over the past 20 to 30 years studying the health benefits of one of turmeric's active ingredients called curcumin. A great overview of the health benefits of turmeric and curcumin can be found at Whole Foods. In summary, turmeric and curcumin are found to be

  • A potent and safe anti-inflammatory
  • An effective Treatment for inflammatory bowel disease
  • Relief for Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • A benefit to Cystic Fibrosis sufferers
  • Inhibits Cancer Cell Growth
  • May help prevent Colon Cancer in combination with onions
  • Helps prevent prostate cancer in combination with cauliflower
  • Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia
  • Improves liver function
  • Provides cardiovascular protection
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • May provide protection against Alzheimer's Disease

Turmeric can be added to salads and vegetables to provide a tasty and peppery flavor. I like drinking turmeric tea in the morning, and it is easy to make. For 1 serving,

  • Bring to boil 1 cup of water
  • Add 1/4 teaspoon of ground turmeric to the water and simmer for about 10 minutes
  • I don't strain the tea, but some may prefer to strain out the remaining particulates.
  • Add honey to taste and enjoy.

You can also add ginger for an added zing to the tea if you prefer.

Here are some recent research articles regarding curcumin:

Remember that diet in combination with a regular exercise program is the best way to a healthier life. For illustrated examples of exercise techniques, click Exercise-To-A-Healthier-Life.com .

HDL and Lower Cancer Risk

According to the research conducted at the Tufts Medical Center Molecular Cardiology Research Institute, "For about a 10-point increase of HDL, there is a reduced risk of cancer by about one third over an average follow-up of 4.5 years." However, this association is not necessarily a linear relationship. "We can say that higher levels of HDL are associated with a lower risk of cancer, but we can't say that one causes the other," stated Dr. Richard Karas, executive director of the Institute.

In other words, HDL levels alone may not reduce cancer risks, but is a result of life style traits that lead to a lower risk of cancer, such as proper diet and exercise. However, HDL may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce the risk of cancer. Further test are needed to determine the exact role of HDL in reducing cancer risks.

Four Unhealthy Habits

According to a study published in the April 26 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine by Elizabeth Kvaavik titled "Influence of Individual and Combined Health Behaviors on Total and Cause-Specific Mortality in Men and Women", a combination of four unhealthy habits greatly increases your risk of premature death.

The bad habits that lead to premature death are

  • Smoking
  • Consuming fruits and vegetables less than three times daily
  • Less than two hours a week of physical activity
  • and weekly consumption of more than 4 ounces for women and 6 ounces for men of alcohol.

Those with all four bad habits were about three times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease or cancer, and four times more likely to die from other causes. These bad habits also age you by about 12 years.
